Introduction

Law school is a competitive environment and you’re going to have to work hard if you want to get in. But it doesn’t have to be all work and no play—there are scholarships out there just waiting for you!  Says Wade Kricken In this guide, we will go over the steps required to apply for law school scholarships so that you can get the funding you need without having to take out student loans or worry about your financial situation later on down the road.

Create a list of law school scholarship opportunities.

  • Do your research. The first step in applying for law school scholarships is to create a list of scholarship opportunities that you qualify for. There are many resources available to help you determine which scholarships may be right for you, including:
  • College and university websites
  • Scholarship databases
  • Law school admission offices

Develop your personal essay.

A personal essay is a narrative that lets the admissions committee get to know you beyond your grades and test scores. It should be about 500-800 words long, describe an important event or experience in your life, and demonstrate how it has influenced you as a person.

The advice I give students is to begin writing your personal statement early—the longer you have to work on it, the better. Once you’re ready to submit it with your application packet, make sure that all parts of the application are complete and submitted by their respective deadlines!

A good rule of thumb for length is 250-300 words per minute of speech; this translates into about 1-1.5 pages (if someone were reading aloud). So if you speak at 150 words per minute, then 2 minutes would be approximately 250 words. If someone speaks faster than 150 wpm (or slower), adjust accordingly for word count based on their rate of speech!

Prepare for the interview.

  • Prepare for the interview.
  • Do your research on the school and its scholarship program, so you can speak knowledgeably about them. The interviewer will likely ask you questions about both, so be prepared to answer them in a professional manner.
  • Practice answering questions that might come up during the interview:

Why do you want to attend this law school?

What are your career goals? How does this degree help achieve those goals? How does it align with your background or interests? What are some of your strengths and weaknesses as an applicant? Why should we choose you over other applicants who may have more experience or better grades than you have earned thus far in college/grad school?

Research the program before applying.

When applying to scholarships, you need to do your research. This step is particularly important if you are still in the process of deciding which law school to attend. Don’t make the mistake of applying for a scholarship simply because it sounds good or you have heard about it somewhere; make sure that it fits your needs as well as your budget.

You will want to find out what kind of reputation the program has before looking into what they offer. Be sure that they are reputable in all areas: academic excellence, providing a good student experience, and postgraduate employment outcomes (especially within your desired field).
